As women move through perimenopause and into postmenopause, they often find themselves navigating more than just shifting hormones. There’s also an invisible yet increasingly relevant burden: environmental toxins that disrupt the endocrine system. One of the most concerning classes of these toxins are xenoestrogens. These are synthetic chemicals that mimic the role of estrogen in our body. Because of their structural similarity, they can bind to estrogen receptors and trigger false signals in the body. This creates a state of estrogen dominance, worsening hormonal imbalances and setting the stage for a cascade of downstream symptoms. These compounds are hiding everywhere. They are in our plastics, personal care products, cosmetics, receipts, even the kitchen towels we use every day. Over time, they accumulate in the body, damaging mitochondria through pro-inflammatory cytokines and oxidative stress, and disturbing cortisol regulation, which has widespread consequences on hormonal, endocrine and metabolic health.

In practice, I see these downstream effects all the time; fatigue, stubborn weight gain, mood swings, insulin resistance, and an increased risk for hormone-driven cancers. And while the body does have built-in systems for detoxification, being the liver, kidneys, gut, lymphatic system, and skin, these systems often struggle under modern-day exposure, especially during midlife when hormonal shifts already make the body more vulnerable. This is where tools like sauna therapy become incredibly valuable. Both near and far-infrared saunas encourage sweating, circulation, and lymphatic flow, helping the body eliminate fat-soluble toxins like phthalates, parabens, and heavy metals more efficiently. Of all these, sweating may be one of the most underrated yet powerful detox pathways we have.

Far-infrared saunas are particularly effective because of their ability to penetrate deeper into tissues. Far-infrared saunas penetrate up to 3–4 centimetres into our skin stimulating a more vigorous sweat at a lower temperature. This makes them a gentler but more impactful tool compared to traditional saunas. Studies show that while traditional sauna sweat is composed of only about 3% toxins, far-infrared sauna sweat can contain up to 20% which is a meaningful difference when we’re talking about endocrine disruptors stored in fat tissue. And when it comes to endocrine disruptors, few are as widespread or as troubling as BPA.

BPA (bisphenol-A) is a synthetic compound commonly found in plastics and food packaging. Its reach is so pervasive that most people are exposed daily. BPA has been associated with implantation failure in women undergoing IVF, altered hormone levels, reduced sperm quality, and DNA damage. Though the body can excrete BPA relatively quickly, most is eliminated in urine within 24 hours. However this continuous exposure means it’s rarely absent from our systems. Sauna therapy has shown promise as a supportive tool for BPA detoxification, with research indicating that sweat is a meaningful route of elimination. Still, sauna use should never be the only strategy. Reducing BPA exposure in the first place should be your first line of defence from these chemicals. By avoiding plastics, choosing glass or stainless steel, and being mindful of personal care products, that would constitute as the first and most powerful step in reducing exposure.

That said, not all saunas are created equal. Lower-quality builds often contain plywood, particleboard, or glues that off-gas volatile organic compounds when heated, undoing the very detox benefits you’re aiming for. Some also emit high levels of EMFs, which can add to the body’s stress burden. This is why I personally use and recommend High Tech Health saunas. Their saunas are made with solid wood, non-toxic adhesives, and extremely low EMF output, making them a safe and effective choice for long-term detox support and hormone health.

Detoxification is not about quick fixes or harsh regimens. It’s about consistently supporting your body’s natural ability to process and eliminate what no longer serves you. For peri- and post-menopausal women, addressing xenoestrogens and other endocrine disruptors can make a tremendous difference in how you feel day to day. Sauna therapy is a gentle, effective, and research-backed approach to help you reclaim your hormonal balance, support detox pathways, and nurture your overall vitality during this powerful stage of life.
