Nutrition And Health

“All disease starts in the gut”

As stated by Hippocrates who is the father of modern medicine, all disease begins in the Gut. Research now shows that most chronic conditions, if not all, are linked to the disruption of our Microbiome in our Gastrointestinal Tract.

If health is considered as the absence of disease, and if all disease starts in the gut, then Nutrition plays a very vital role in health and vitality. The food we eat is the first thing to enter our gastrointestinal tracts. The food we eat nourishes us and feeds our microbiome, which consequently affects all systems of the body.

Our microbiome are the trillions of bacteria, viruses, and fungi that live in and on the human body. Humans live in symbiosis with their gut microbiomes, and each individual will have its own blueprint. Through the simple act of eating nutritious foods, we provide food for our gut bacteria and in turn, they perform vital functions such as extracting energy from this food, regulating our appetite, mood, behaviour, sleep and even our hormones. Our microbiome is deeply influenced by our diet, age, lifestyle, antibiotic use, stress, medications, toxic load and sleep.

As a Nutritional Therapist, supporting gut health is vital in helping my clients recover from their health issues, be it simple or complex. It is the epicentre of health and influences all aspects of human biology, through its interaction with us. Through research we now know that there is cross-talk between our gut microbiome and all other systems of the body. I look at gut health as my foundation in improving one’s health and working its way up. Eating the right foods which nourishes your microbiome, is vital to recovering, feeling and looking better.

In today’s world, the importance of good nutrition is overlooked and there is a lot of emphasis on “quick fixes”. I will be the first one to tell you that there are no quick fixes to health and vitality. You and only you can bring the body back into balance by putting in the effort. I believe that by making simple changes to your diet, everyone can improve their health and their outlook on life. If you would like more information on my approach, get in touch here.
