Depression
Depression is not just one thing. It is not simply “low serotonin” or a chemical imbalance. Depression can reflect a deeper story which involves physiological, psycho-social, environmental and internal narratives. Depression can manifest as mitochondrial fatigue, chronic inflammation, nutrient deficiencies, hormonal shifts, or gut-brain imbalances and there are many individuals who are function as a very high level with depression. For one person, depression may stem from low vitamin D and thyroid dysfunction. For another, it may be linked to blood sugar dysregulation or microbiome changes that affect serotonin and GABA production.
In my practice, I use blood testing, stool analysis, DUTCH hormone testing, and Nutrigenomic testing to uncover the unique imbalances driving each client’s depression. This helps me see whether neurotransmitters, stress hormones, or genetic polymorphisms are playing a role.
Personalised Low-Carb/Ketogenic Diets are one of the most powerful tools I use in depression care. Ketones provide the brain with a stable energy source, reduce inflammation, and increase GABA activity while lowering oxidative stress. This allows the brain to restore its energy homeostasis which is the foundation for motivation, mood, and joy. Combined with nutrient replenishment, circadian rhythm support, and gentle lifestyle practices, this approach provides more than symptom relief it helps rebuild resilience from the inside out.
