As summer holidays approach, many of us start to loosen the reins. Holidays are meant to be a break from routine, a time to unwind and enjoy. But here’s a gentle reminder: what you eat still has the power to shape how you feel, especially while you’re away. Your dietary choices don’t have to be perfect, but they will absolutely influence your energy, mood, digestion, and sleep even on holiday.
Low-carb and ketogenic ways of eating often get dismissed as trends, but they’re anything but that. While diets come and go, the physiology behind low-carb living is ancient. This isn’t a fad, it’s a return to how humans evolved to eat. Our ancestors didn’t snack every few hours. They hunted, gathered, and often went without food for extended periods. A 2022 meta-analysis published in Obesity Reviews found that individuals following low-carb diets consistently experienced greater weight loss than those on low-fat diets, even when calories were matched. This isn’t just about eating fewer calories, it’s about improving how the body uses energy. By lowering carbohydrate intake, insulin levels drop, which reduces fat storage and increases fat burning. That’s a huge plus for anyone heading into vacation wanting to feel lighter, clearer, and more in control of their hunger.
Another clinical trial published in The New England Journal of Medicine compared a low-carb diet to a low-fat diet and found that participants on the low-carb plan not only lost more weight but also experienced greater improvements in triglyceride levels and insulin sensitivity. These aren’t abstract metrics, they do indeed directly impact how you feel day to day. Stable blood sugar means fewer crashes and cravings. Lower insulin means your body is more efficient at using stored fat for fuel.
For travellers, this matters. Jet lag, airport lounges, buffet spreads, late meals, circadian rhythm disruptions, and constant dining out can make digestion sluggish and energy unpredictable. But when you’re metabolically flexible and when your body knows how to burn fat you’re more resilient. You’re not at the mercy of every snack or skipped meal.
